King's Park Phase Two Upgrade has Commenced
May 19, 2008
The Phase Two upgrade of King's Park has commenced and in the next six months, the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union will invest HK$28 million to replace the existing grass pitches. State of the art artificial surfaces and match-quality lighting will be provided to both Pitches 2 and 3.
With the completion of the Phase One upgrade last year, the usage of King's Park has grown significantly. There is an insatiable demand for quality sports pitches for rugby and the other sports which uses King's Park, particularly after hours. The grass pitches could not take the beating that constant use gives them, are costly and time-consuming to maintain, and do not provide a good quality playing surface.
Pitch 3 only had temporary lighting, while Pitch 2 had no lighting at all.
The HKRFU has given the highest priority to investing in better facilities for the playing of rugby and other sports.
The provision of new lighting and the artificial surfaces mean that there will be three pitches available for use seven days a week, throughout the year. This will go some way to meeting the ever-growing need for a high quality sports venue capable of holding large multi-game events and sports festivals.
Both of the pitches will be increased in size to the maximum possible, with new netting, safety equipment, score boards and seating provided. Children's play equipment will also be installed.
Two new buildings will be constructed to replace the existing temporary container facilities. These will be of high quality design and provide increased toilet facilities for up to 3,000 people. A new food kiosk will be built between Pitch 1 and Pitch 2 to provide even better food and beverage service.
A roof will also be provided over the seating at Pitch 1.
The upgrade will be completed in stages before October 2008. For safety reasons, the Pitch 2 and 3 will be off-limits to users during the construction period.
Pitch 1 and the Clubhouse will continue to be available for bookings throughout this period. Enquiries are welcome at the Management Office. |
